A Passage to India…

A Passage to India…

A land of timeless beauty and rich heritage, India has always been a canvas painted with vivid images that evoke romance and nostalgia. The era of Colonial India, in particular, offers a tapestry of scenes that blend the mystique of the ancient with the charm of the bygone days.

The privilege of observation- walking in quietude in holy sites- amongst the carved fresco layers of detailed cultural tributes to deities and folklore- temples and shrines of ancient wisdom…embracing of a gentle humanity layered in Spirit and acceptance of others… and the gift of being…. Our 1077Atelier sourcing trips to India remain food for our souls.

Nestled amidst the verdant greenery and bustling bazaars are the majestic temples, ancient shrines and spires stand as serene sanctuaries, their intricate carvings and towering height whispering tales of devotion and divine love. These sacred spaces, adorned with the artistry of countless generations, were places where time seemed to stand still. Lovers would often seek solace in the cool shadows of these hallowed grounds, their whispered vows mingling with the prayers of the faithful.

A Passage to India…

The ancient craft of silversmithing, passed down through generations, adds another layer of romance to this rich tapestry. In dimly lit workshops, artisans bend over their workbenches, their skilled hands transforming raw silver into exquisite pieces of jewellery. Each piece, whether a delicate anklet or an ornate necklace, tells a story of love, tradition, and artistry. Fine filigree work adorn most pieces, and become family heirlooms passed down to the next generation.

Tales told in repoussé work illustrating hunting scenes with tigers, deer and elephant- tribal and ethnic heritage that has become collector’s treasures- some pieces finely gilded in high carat gold- others so heavy in their silver value demanding high international prices.

Jewellery, in colonial India, is more than mere adornment; it is a language of love and status. The intricate designs, studded with precious stones, are tokens of affection, symbols of commitment, and markers of status and identity. The sight of a bride, resplendent in her bridal finery, her Jewellery gleaming in the soft light, is a vision of romance and tradition, a celebration of love that transcends time.

March heralds Spring in India- Holi Colour festival, streets filled with blossom and aromatic spices- whafts of scented incense and the joy of a people embracing the Earth’s change of season. Very few cultures bring this audible joy of wearing jewellery so simply to the fore- the streets and markets of India can be alive with the sound of bangles clinking as women tell their daily stories in ardent hand gestures to one another- and the small bells mounted on ankle bracelets hold rhythm to expressive dance and mundane daily duties.

We take from our tribute in our Passage to India- an understanding of positive cultural relationships and personal friendships, where cultural diversity and religious freedoms are underpinned with mutual respect. But most of all, we cherish the foundation of Indian life, as Foster explored in many of his previous works – “the need to stay connected to Mother Earth – while living in your head.”
